International Symposium on Sustainable Environment and Pollution Control was organized by the Department of Environmental Engineering, NED University of Engineering & Technology on January 19, 2026 at the AV Hall of the Mechanical Engineering Department, NED University, Karachi. This International Symposium was focused on the theme “Building a Pollution Free Future Through Sustainable Innovation”. The Department of Environmental Engineering has a track record of organizing local and international seminars/ symposium and conferences. In view of the importance of this event, a large number of scientists and professionals from different universities and other research institutions/organizations located particularly in Sindh participated in the one-day International Symposium and interacted with each other and also the guest speakers shared their industrial experience related to environmental sustainability and research findings in the technical sessions. The event started with the recitation of few verses from the Holy Quran. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tufail, Vice Chancellor, NED University of Engineering & Technology, welcomed the symposium participants and highlighted the importance of sustainability with the rapid changing environment due to climatic situations, responsible consumption, and technology driven solutions. Prof. Dr. Atif Mustafa, Chairman, Department of Environmental Engineering welcomed participants with the symposium briefing and mentioned the speakers of this event were an exceptional group of international and national experts who brought perspectives from innovation clusters, renewable energy transitions, advanced wastewater treatment, ESG-driven governance, waste-to-energy systems, sustainable manufacturing, and nature-based solutions such as microalgae-based technologies. The keynote speaker of the symposium was Prof. Dr. Heekwan Lee, Director, Incheon Innovation Cluster, Incheon National University, Republic of Korea talked on “Incheon Innovation Cluster and the Triple Helix: A Blueprint for Environment Specialized Innovation Cluster”. He shared insights of triple helix model, initiatives taken by the Incheon National University, Republic of Korea and shared how this shall be helpful in joint collaboration with Industry and academia in Pakistan. He mentioned memorandum of understanding inked between the NED University, the Korangi Association of Trade & Industry (KATI) and the Incheon National University. The closing ceremony was addressed by Prof. Dr. Asad-ur-Rehman Khan, Dean, Faculty of Civil and Petroleum Engineering (CPL). He acknowledged efforts of the Department of Environmental Engineering in organizing this very important symposium of international repute inviting international and national speakers to present and highlight on the Sustainable Environment and Pollution Control The Dean presented shield / mementos to guest speakers of the symposium thereafter, the Incheon Innovation Cluster (IIC) Pakistan Branch office was inaugurated by DEAN CPL. Following the symposium, the Dean (CPL) hosted the opening of the "Incheon Innovation Cluster (IIC) Branch Office at the Department of Environmental Engineering at NED University. The idea behind the opening of IIC branch office at NED University is to connect Incheon National University (INU), which actively drives innovation through initiatives like the Incheon Innovation Cluster (IIC) for Environment Technology with Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) and for industry-academia collaboration. The activities of the office include, joint research development proposals, joint technology development or technology transfer, and organizing joint conferences and seminars. |
