A field visit to Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) area of Karachi was organized by Dr. Abdul Ghaffar, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering. The visit was arranged on 21st September 2024 for the postgraduate students of EN-526 Solid Waste Management course in the Masters of Environmental Engineering Weekend Programme. This visit provided students with an in-depth exploration of municipal solid waste management practices within CBC’s jurisdiction, emphasizing a critical evaluation of collection methods, operational efficiency, and potential areas for improvement.

The study specifically focused on DHA Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 2 Extension, where students observed various waste management processes firsthand. Key activities included the examination of green waste collection, municipal waste collection via hydraulic containers, beach cleaning initiatives, and operations at the Garbage Transfer Station (GTS). These observations offered students a comprehensive understanding of the operational standards and challenges faced by CBC in maintaining effective waste management within an urban context.

This field visit exemplified the value of experiential learning in environmental engineering, equipping students with practical insights into the complexities of urban waste management in Karachi and preparing them to devise informed, impactful solutions focusing waste to energy solutions in their field.
